New Faculty Profile: Sam Gleason

With the start the 2016-17 school year, ESK welcomed several new teachers to the middle school staff. Over the next few weeks, we will profile each of those teachers. We hope you enjoy getting to know more about each of these teachers – our staff members are truly a great asset for both the school and our students. Today, we feature our new middle school Latin teacher Sam Gleason. Sam has experience as both a english and Latin teacher and brings a great wealth of experience and passion for Latin to ESK.

Sam Gleason

MS Latin Teacher

13 years of experience

Where did you work prior to coming to ESK?

Maryville College – Adjunct English Instructor

Pellissippii State – Adjunct English Instructor

Pope John Paul the Great Catholic High School

Knoxville Catholic High School

What made you decide to become a teacher?

It started with my mother who first gave me the idea to teach when I was in college. I was an English major and loved to read. My mother suggested that I take the passion I had for literature and help students to gain the same appreciation that I had.

What was it about ESK that made you want to be a teacher here?

I enjoy the small community and family atmosphere of ESK. (I also like purple, the color of Roman emperors!)

What aspect of teaching are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about introducing students who are new to Latin to this language that has lasted for over 2,000 years.

What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?

Like all teachers, I feel that my passion for my particular subject area allows me to connect with students who are eager to learn more about Latin and ancient Rome.

What do you want your students to gain from having known you?

I hope my students gain a greater appreciation for all humanities subjects through a closer study of Latin. Perhaps one of them will be the next great classicist of the 21st century?
