New Faculty Profile: Beth Sterchi

With the start the 2016-17 school year, ESK welcomed several new teachers to the middle school staff. Over the next few weeks, we will profile each of those teachers. We hope you enjoy getting to know more about each of these teachers – our staff members are truly a great asset for both the school and our students. Today, we begin with fifth and sixth grade language arts teacher Beth Sterchi. Beth joined ESK on staff prior to last school year — serving as an assistant for Mrs. Jenkins’ and filling in as lead teacher while both Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs. Parham were on maternity leave.

Where did you work prior to coming to ESK?

Onslow Country Schools – Jacksonville, N.C. – 13 years

Knox County Schools – Knoxville, T.N. – 7 years

What made you decide to become a teacher?

I always enjoyed school as a child. My elementary school teachers influenced my decision to become a teacher because they made learning fun and I wanted to try to have that impact on young kids.

What was it about ESK that made you want to be a teacher here?

I needed a change from the rigid boundaries of public school. My friends (Leslie Downey, Rachel Hacker and Courtney George) encouraged me to apply.

What aspect of teaching are you most passionate about?

Finding new ways to connect with kids – developing trusting relationships so they are willing to take risks in learning.

What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?

I feel I have creative ideas and I am constantly trying new things.

What do you want your students to gain from having known you?

I would like for them to be self-confident, independent learners and to have a positive sense of self.
