Teachers we love: New faculty at ESK

The start of a new school year means we get to welcome new (and returning!) faculty members to the ESK family! To get to know each new faculty member a little better, we’ve asked them a few questions. Cathy Stivers, a beloved returning faculty member who will teach 3rd grade during the 2018-2019 school year, agreed to kick-off the series to tell us about her summers as a kid and why she loves ESK.

Q&A with Cathy Stivers

Can you tell us about your favorite summer memory?

Ms. Stivers: When I was in elementary school the ride to my grandparents house was 21 hours long, so I would lay in the backseat of our station wagon and read all the new books my mom would buy for me. It made the time go by really fast. That’s where I developed my love of books!

Since you love reading, what would you say is your favorite book?

Ms. Stivers: Anything written by Carl Hiaasen – Scat would be my favorite because it was my “Birthday Book” one year. Look in the library and see if you can find out who gave it to me.

Looking back, who was your favorite teacher?

Ms. Stivers: Mr. Maulden, my high school Algebra 2 teacher. He could stand on a metal trash can and move around the classroom on it while teaching. He also made Algebra fun!

Finally, what would you say is your favorite thing about ESK?

Ms. Stivers: Being able to do outdoor activities with my class!

We can’t wait to see you back in the classroom at ESK in August, Ms. Stivers!  Our independent school on the hill is always happy to have people who know and love our community serving alongside as we prepare JK-8 students for a lifetime of learning.
