As students in the third grade learned about the six different simple machines, they also learned problem solving skills. Once students learned about the incline plane, wedge, wheel and axel, lever, screw, and the pulley, students had to incorporate three of these into their inventions. Their inventions or Valentine Delivery Systems were sketched in our Innovation Lab and designed to have a marble get from one destination to another. Students learned how to problem solve as they tried to make their sketch a reality. Maybe the machine did not work the way they wanted it to, or maybe they had to add another machine to get the marble to travel the desired direction.
