New Faculty Profile: Pamela Shields

With the start the 2016-17 school year, ESK welcomed several new teachers to the middle school staff. Over the next few weeks, we will profile each of those teachers. We hope you enjoy getting to know more about each of these teachers – our staff members are truly a great asset for both the school and our students. Today, we feature our new Jr Kindergarten 4 teacher Pamela Shields. Pamela isn’t new to ESK as she served as an assistant in fourth grade last year, but has transitioned to a new position this year.

Where did you work prior to coming to ESK?

I taught at Faith Early Learning Center, River’s Edge Christian Academy and owned Shields Educational Services here in Tennessee. Previously, I have also taught developmentally disabled adults and worked as an activity director at Convalescent Hospitals.

What made you decide to become a teacher?

I decided to become a teacher because I enjoy making a difference in the lives of children and helping to instill a love for learning and growing.

What was it about ESK that made you want to be a teacher here?

I love the community, Tribes Agreements, and hands-on real learning that takes place at ESK. ESK is a very special place where teachers can really teach to the needs of the students.

What aspect of teaching are you most passionate about?

I am passionate about students enjoying the learning process and feeling empowered.

What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?

I grew up in a family of educators and musicians in a diverse community on the West Coast. I have worked with young children, elderly and developmentally disabled. I bring my love and compassion for all people into my classroom.

What do you want your students to gain from having known you?

I want my students to gain an enthusiasm for learning and to know that ESK is a safe place for them to make mistakes, grow and learn. I want them to feel a sense of family and community here at school.
