Fourth Grade Activities

One of our many strengths at ESK is that our students learn by participating and not simply watching and listening. A great example is when fourth grade learns about the geology and topography of Tennessee. Students walk the trails on our 97 acres to collect rocks, and they use a scratch test to classify their specimens. Each student makes an individual topographic map of Tennessee. First they have to measure and mark gridlines and plot coordinates to draw a representation of the state outline. Next they use paper mache to form the mountains and paint the landforms. They label mountains, rivers, cities, and add a compass rose. Students use math skills and social studies knowledge to create an artifact as well as a great memory. When students learn about famous Tennesseans they dress up, interview, and film each other as their chosen character. Educators have long known that learning is cemented by culminating activities such as these. We do not simply assign a reading and give a quiz. We plan lessons in all our classes to integrate the curriculum in innovative and creative ways meant to excite children. It does take extra time and effort, but we know it is worth it. We see it in the faces of our students every day!
